Obituary

As the sun rose on a brilliant and beautiful Sunday morning, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Vearlen "Honee" Sullivan Baskin ascended towards the golden stairway to Heaven. She fought a good fight; however, the Lord had a greater purpose in mind. In her new Heavenly home, Vearlen is no longer suffering, and her soul is free. She is singing with the Angels, dancing amongst the clouds and enjoying a sweet reunion with loved ones Vearlen was born April 4, 1942, to the late Clarence Sullivan Sr. and the late Geraldine Rufus Sullivan of Forest City, Arkansas. She was the fifth of 14 children and number 3 in the succession of girls. As one of the older children, Vearlen assisted in rearing her younger siblings. At an early age, Vearlen learned the value of family, hard work, diligence, and dedication. Growing up in the south was especially challenging, but Vearlen was resilient, clever, and immensely talented. The school of life afforded her an invaluable education, that enabled her to succeed no matter where she traveled throughout the country. Vearlen's spiritual journey and love of the Lord began as a young child growing up in Arkansas. It continued throughout her entire life, and she was proud to tell anyone how good the Lord had been to her. She was continuously blessed and highly favored. The opportunities at home in Arkansas were few and far between for any person of color. Like many of her siblings, Vearlen was blessed with an internal spark that ignited a flame and desire to travel. She lived in New York, Boston, Florida, Colorado, and countless other states. Despite her adventurous spirit, Vearlen would drop everything if any of her sisters were lonely or wanted help with the children. Countless nieces and nephews benefited from "aunties" love, guidance, and infectious personality. The traveling spirit catapulted Vearlen to sunny California, and her life changed forever. She met and married, Gerald Baskin, a military man who was the love of her life. Gerald and Verlean were life partners and enjoyed years of wedded bliss until his death. Vearlen's spirit, energy, and zest for life will be missed Vearlen was an intelligent, fun-loving woman who embraced humor, kindness, and the power of positive thinking. She loved, adored, and appreciated her family, friends, and everyone she met. Vearlen never met a stranger and embraced all the opportunities life had to offer. In addition to loving the Lord, she was known to be a phenomenal seamstress, amazing cook, and second mother to her nieces and nephew. Her family enjoyed culinary delights through Sunday dinners, homemade biscuits, and tantalizing tea cakes. Verlin was preceded in death by her parents Clarence Sullivan Sr. and Geraldine Rufus Sullivan. Her beloved husband Gerald Baskin and many brothers and sisters welcomed her to Heaven. They comprise Pearlen S. Thomas, Clarence Sullivan Jr., Evelyn S. McCray, Willie D. Sullivan Sr., Adell Sullivan, and Odell Sullivan. Vearlen "Honee" Sullivan Baskin is survived by her loving brothers and sisters Margoree S. Wilburn, Earnestine Sullivan, Vearnell S. Kennedy (Harold), Priscilla Sullivan, Inell Sullivan, Clyde Sullivan, Elvis Sullivan, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.Services will be at Wilson Funeral Home in Blytheville, Arkansas at 2pm will burial at Memory Gardens.
